Over the last couple of years, the climate of economic austerity prevailing within the Eurozone has had a severe impact on the public funding of member states -at national and regional levels- and led to serious cuts, in funding available to civil society. It has therefore become crucial for any member of civil society working at European and national level, to be able to gain better clarity of the public and private funding opportunities that exist at European level.

The EU allocates considerable financial resources to projects and actions that are related to EU policies that can be of interest for civil society organizations active in the field of human rights ,social inclusion, education, culture or environment,. However, in spite of the potential added value that those opportunities can offer, the European Union funding architecture mechanisms are perceived as complex to navigate and application procedures cumbersome.

However, EU funding rules are certainly tough, but gaining access to EU funds is not impossible, provided that some efforts are put into identifying the relevant EU funding instruments and managing an application process.
